Buy Ayurvedic Medicine for Joint and Muscle Pain

Joint and muscle pain is any ache, stiffness or soreness in the knees, back, neck, shoulders, or the muscles that move them. For some people it shows up after one hard day. For others it has been there for years.

The tablets and powders above are Ayurvedic medicines for this pain. Some help stiff knees and joints. Others work as a muscle pain relief medicine for a sore back or legs. Pick the one that fits where it hurts. If a doctor has already said it's arthritis, see our Arthritis & Joint Care page.

What Causes Joint and Muscle Pain?

In Ayurveda, most of this pain comes from vata, the dosha that controls movement in the body. When vata rises, joints turn dry and stiff, and muscles stay tight. That's why Ayurveda treatment for joint pain is mostly about bringing vata down. Dryness is a big part of the problem, so a warm Ayurveda joint pain oil is often rubbed on along with the tablets. Why do joint pains start? Most often, for one of these reasons:

  • Age. The soft cushion between two bones gets thinner over the years, mostly in the knees and hips.
  • Sitting at a desk all day or looking down at a phone for hours puts strain on the neck and lower back.
  • A fall or a twisted ankle. Lifting a heavy bucket with a bent back can do it too.
  • Extra body weight. When you walk, every extra kilo puts about four kilos of load on your knees.
  • Pain that shoots from the lower back down one leg usually means a nerve is pressed in the spine. This is sciatica. Feel tingling or numbness with it? Have a look at our Nerve & Nervous System Care page.
  • After chikungunya or dengue, joint pain can stay for weeks. Sometimes months.

Diet for Joint and Muscle Pain

What to eat for joint pain?

Eat warm food, cooked fresh at home. In Ayurveda, half-digested food leaves a sticky waste that makes joints stiff. Make your rotis from whole wheat atta, bajra or jowar. And cook with garlic, onion and ginger, since all three help bring swelling down.

Which food increases joint pain?

Sugar, maida, fried food and salty namkeen make swelling worse. Sugar also hides in packaged juice and biscuits. Ayurveda adds two more to this list: cold food straight from the fridge, and a heavy dinner late at night.

Tap a food to see if it fits your joint pain diet. The colour tells you at a glance: green is safe, amber needs care, red is best avoided.

Fruits

BananaRipe, by day

A ripe banana gives potassium, which the muscles need to work well. Ayurveda sees it as heavy and cooling, so have it in the daytime and not with milk.

PineappleYes, fresh

Pineapple has bromelain, a natural enzyme that may ease joint pain and swelling. Most of it is in the hard centre, so don't throw that part away. Skip tinned pineapple, because it's soaked in sugar syrup.

CherriesYes, in season

Fresh cherries may lower uric acid, and people with gout tend to get fewer attacks when they eat them. They're in season in summer. Unsweetened cherry juice works the rest of the year.

Food

Green sabziYes, half your plate

Gobhi, patta gobhi, broccoli and palak are some of the best vegetables for sore joints. Add shimla mirch for vitamin C.

TomatoCooked, yes

Cooking raises the lycopene in tomato. Lycopene is an antioxidant that calms swelling. So tomato in dal or sabzi does more good than raw tomato.

Rajma and chanaSoaked, at lunch

They're full of protein. But Ayurveda calls them gassy, and gas raises vata. Soak them overnight and cook them with hing and jeera.

FishYes, not fried

Bangda, hilsa and salmon are rich in omega-3 fats, which ease stiffness and swelling in the joints. Have it grilled or in a curry, about twice a week.

Akhrot and alsiA small handful

Don't eat fish? Walnuts and flaxseed give a plant form of the same fats. A small handful of akhrot, or a spoon of roasted, ground alsi over dal or curd, is enough for a day. Buy them unsalted.

Mutton and sausagesCut down

Red meat and processed meat carry a lot of saturated fat, and that fat is linked to more swelling in the body. Eggs, paneer or dal are better ways to get protein.

Drinks

Haldi doodhYes, warm at bedtime

Haldi has curcumin, which helps calm swelling in the joints. But the body takes in very little curcumin on its own. A pinch of black pepper in the milk helps the body take in much more of it.

Chai and coffeeTwo cups a day

Keep it to a cup or two, with less sugar. The sugar does more harm than the tea. Green tea is a better swap, since it has EGCG, an antioxidant that may help protect the joints.

Beer and alcoholBest avoided

Beer is high in purines, and these push uric acid up fast enough to start a gout attack. Hard drinks also dry out the body. In Ayurveda, that dryness means more vata pain.

When to See a Doctor

Pain from a hard day's work or a bad pillow usually eases within a week. If yours doesn't, or it keeps coming back, see a doctor. Don't wait if you notice any of these:

  • A joint that suddenly turns hot, red and swollen, more so with fever
  • You can't put weight on a leg, or move a joint, after a fall
  • Muscle pain along with very dark, cola-coloured urine
  • Morning stiffness that lasts more than an hour on most days
  • Pain that wakes you every night, or weight loss you can't explain

Back pain with numbness between the legs, or trouble controlling urine or stools, needs a hospital straight away.

If you already take a painkiller, steroid or blood thinner, talk to your doctor before adding anything from this page. Don't stop the prescribed medicine on your own. Several of these tablets have gold or other mineral ashes in them, so stick to the dose on the pack and stop when your doctor tells you to. Pregnant women, and anyone buying for a child, should check with a doctor first.

FAQs on Joint and Muscle Pain

Why It Hurts

What's muscle pain?

It's pain in the soft flesh that moves your bones. It can feel like a dull ache or a sudden cramp. Press the sore spot. If that hurts, it's likely the muscle. Joint pain hurts more when you bend the joint.

What causes joint and muscle aches all over the body?

A viral fever often starts this way. Low vitamin D and low B12 are also very common in India. A slow thyroid can do it too. One blood test can check all of these.

Why does joint pain increase in winter?

Cold makes muscles tight, and tight muscles pull on the joints. In Ayurveda, cold weather also raises vata. Keep your knees and back warm, and don't skip your daily walk.

Can uric acid cause joint pain?

Yes. When uric acid stays high, it forms tiny sharp crystals in a joint. This is called gout. It usually hits the big toe, which swells up and hurts badly. Kaleji, prawns and crab raise uric acid.

Back, Neck and Knees

Why does neck pain keep coming back?

Often the neck bones have started to wear with age. Many people call this "cervical". A high pillow makes it worse, so use a low one that keeps your neck straight.

Which Ayurvedic medicine is best for sciatica?

Sciatica pain burns or feels like a small electric shock in the leg. Sitting for long makes it worse. Dabur Swarna Guggulu with Gold and Kesar is used for this type of leg pain. Sit on a firm chair instead of a soft sofa.

Why do my knees make a cracking sound?

Small gas bubbles in the knee pop when you bend. If there's no pain, it's harmless. If it hurts too, the cushion inside the knee may have worn down. The best medicine for knee joint pain depends on the cause, so see a doctor first. For knees that are stiff with age, Dhootapapeshwar Swarnamahayoga is used.

Is walking good for knee pain?

Yes. Walking keeps the thigh muscles strong, and strong thighs take load off the knees. Start with 10 to 15 minutes on flat ground. Avoid squatting and sitting cross-legged on the floor.

Muscles

Why is there muscle pain after workout?

New or hard exercise causes tiny tears in the muscle. As they heal, the muscle hurts, mostly on the second day. This is normal and goes away in a few days. A sudden sharp pain during a workout is different. Stop and rest, as it may be a pulled muscle.

Why do I get muscle pain when I cough?

A long cough strains the muscles around your ribs and belly. Each new cough pulls on them again, so it hurts. The pain goes once the cough settles. If your back hurts sharply every time you cough, get it checked for a slipped disc.

How to relieve muscle pain?

Rest the muscle for a day, but don't stay in bed. Use a cold pack on the first day of a fresh strain. After that, use a hot water bag or take a warm bath. Gentle stretching helps too.

Why do leg muscles cramp at night?

Most often, it's too little water. Low magnesium, potassium or calcium can also cause it, and so can some BP tablets. Stretch your calves before bed. When a cramp starts, pull your toes towards you.

Care and Treatment

What are some Ayurvedic remedies for joint pain at home?

Soak a spoon of methi seeds overnight and chew them in the morning. For stiff knees or back, press a warm potli of roasted ajwain and salt on the spot. And do a few minutes of gentle yoga every day.

How to use Ayurvedic oil for joint pain?

Oil massage is a big part of treatment for joint pain in Ayurveda. Warm the oil a little and rub it in slowly for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep the area covered afterwards, away from a fan or AC. Don't massage a joint that has just swollen up.

Which sleeping position is best for back pain?

Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under them. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. A firm mattress is better than a soft one.

Does joint pain Ayurveda treatment take long to work?

Not always. Some people feel better in one or two weeks. Old pain usually needs six to eight weeks or more. Take the medicine daily and don't stop as soon as the pain eases, because it may come back.
