Buy Ayurvedic Medicine for Asthma

Asthma is a lung problem that can stay for years. What asthma means, in simple words, is that the air pipes inside your chest sometimes become narrow. Less air can pass through, so breathing feels hard. After a while the pipes open up and you feel normal again.

Pick the asthma medicine that suits you from the Ayurvedic products above.

Common Symptoms of Asthma

Asthma symptoms aren't the same for everyone. Look out for these:

  • Wheezing, a whistle-like sound as you breathe out
  • Breathless after one flight of stairs
  • A heavy, tight chest
  • Cough that's worse at night or early morning
  • You start coughing after a good laugh or a quick run

Some people never wheeze. A dry cough that hangs on for weeks is their only sign. But a cough with fever and yellow phlegm is different. That's usually an infection, and our Cough & Respiratory Care range is the better place to look.

What Are the Causes for Asthma?

In most people, asthma grows out of a mix of reasons, not just one. The most common asthma reason is a body that reacts too easily to allergies. That's why people with eczema (itchy skin patches) or hay fever (sneezing from pollen) get it more often. Children who had bad chest infections as babies are also at higher risk, and so are kids whose mothers smoked while pregnant. In adults, chemical fumes at work and extra body weight can bring it on. Knowing what causes asthma in your own case makes the triggers below easier to avoid.

In Ayurveda, asthma is called Tamaka Shwasa. It happens when too much kapha (mucus) builds up in the chest and blocks the air pipes. Air can't flow out freely, so you wheeze and feel short of breath.

Once you have asthma, the cause of asthma attacks is often something small from daily life:

  • Dust in the house
  • Smoke from vehicles or agarbatti
  • Strong smells like perfume, mosquito coil or paint
  • Sitting under the AC for hours
  • Sudden cold weather
  • Flu or a bad cold
  • Pollen or pet hair

Kapha goes up in winter and in the rainy season. That's why many people get more attacks in these months. If you often feel heavy and full of mucus, our Kapha Dosha Balance page may help too.

Diet and Eating Habits for Asthma Patients

What's on your plate can make your chest feel lighter or heavier. These are the food questions asthma patients ask us most.

What should an asthma patient eat?

Eat warm, freshly cooked food. Wheat roti, old rice, moong dal and seasonal sabzi are easy on the chest. Add a little ginger, black pepper or haldi while cooking. Fresh fruits and green vegetables should be part of every day. Drink warm water instead of cold, all through the day.

When the chest feels tight, what to eat?

Keep meals small and light. A full stomach pushes up on the lungs and makes breathing harder. Moong dal khichdi or a warm soup is a good choice. Eat dinner early, at least two to three hours before bed.

Tap a food to see if it fits your asthma diet. The colour tells you at a glance: green is safe, amber needs care, red is best avoided.

Fruits

BananaBy day

Bananas carry selenium, a mineral that helps protect the lungs. But Ayurveda sees banana as heavy and cold. So eat it by day and skip it at night.

OrangeYes

Oranges are full of vitamin C, which helps calm swelling in the airways. Eat them at room temperature, not straight from the fridge.

Dry fruitsNuts, yes

Almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds give vitamin E, which is good for the lungs. Go easy on packaged golden kishmish and dried apricots, because many of them have added preservatives that can bring on an attack.

Food

EggsYes

Eggs are one of the few foods with vitamin D. People low in vitamin D often get more asthma attacks. Boiled eggs or a light bhurji work best. Some children are allergic to eggs, so watch for wheezing or rashes after eating.

PicklesA little

Achar is sour, salty and oily. In Ayurveda, sour and salty tastes add to kapha. A small spoon once in a while is fine, but not with every meal.

Garlic and onionCooked, a little

Ayurveda counts garlic as good for the chest, so cook it into your dal or sabzi. Just keep raw onion and garlic to a small amount, since too much can give some people gas.

Drinks

MilkWarm, if it suits you

Most people with asthma can have warm milk with a pinch of haldi. Skip cold milk. And if milk always leaves you with more phlegm, or you're allergic to it, leave it out.

CoffeeA cup or two

Coffee doesn't harm most people with asthma. A cup can even ease breathing a little for a short while. Stop at two cups, and skip it if it ever makes you wheezy.

Cold drinksBest skipped

Chilled drinks tighten the airways in many people, and the sugar adds to kapha. Warm water, ginger tea or tulsi tea are better swaps.

When to See a Doctor

A severe asthma attack is an emergency. Go to a hospital right away if you see:

  • Bluish lips or fingernails
  • Talking in broken words because a full breath won't come
  • Your blue reliever gives little or no relief
  • Drowsiness or confusion

Using the reliever more than twice a week means your asthma isn't under control. Get it checked.

Ayurvedic tablets work best as one part of your asthma treatment, alongside the inhaler your doctor prescribed. Most tablets here contain processed gold and mercury, so take them only as long as your vaidya advises. Pregnant women and children should start only on a doctor's advice.

FAQs on Asthma

Why It Happens

Why asthma happens?

The airways in asthma are over-sensitive, so they overreact to a trigger. The muscles around them tighten. The lining swells. And thick mucus fills whatever space is left.

Will asthma spread?

No. It isn't an infection, so you can't catch it from someone. It does run in families, though. A child with an asthmatic parent has a higher chance of getting it.

Cure & Risk

Can asthma be cured?

No medicine, Ayurvedic or modern, offers a permanent cure yet. Ayurvedic pills for asthma, like Baidyanath Swas Chintamani Ras Gold, work on clearing extra kapha from the chest and building lung strength, so attacks come less often and stay milder. And will asthma go away on its own? In children, it often fades by the teens, though it can come back in adult life. Asthma that starts in adulthood usually stays. But with good care, it can stay quiet for years.

Can asthma kill you?

It can, though it's rare. In a very bad attack, the air pipes close so tight that the body stops getting enough oxygen. India has about 1 in 8 of the world's asthma patients. But more than 4 in 10 asthma deaths in the world happen here, mostly because people reach a doctor too late. The risk is higher for smokers and for anyone who has been in hospital for asthma before. Stopping the daily inhaler as soon as you feel better is another big danger. Kept under control, asthma very rarely turns deadly.

What to do during an asthma attack at home?

Sit up straight and don't lie down. Take one puff of your blue reliever every 30 to 60 seconds, up to 10 puffs. If you're still not better, go to a hospital immediately.

Is asthma dangerous in pregnancy?

Only when it's not under control, because a bad attack cuts down the oxygen reaching the baby. So keep using your inhaler as your doctor advised. Tell your gynaecologist about your asthma at the very first visit.

Treatment

How asthma is diagnosed or treated?

A breathing test called spirometry, where you blow hard into a tube, confirms it. Most doctors treat asthma with two inhalers. A daily preventer calms the swelling slowly. The reliever is kept for attacks and opens the tubes within minutes. When cough and breathlessness come together, some vaidyas add Dhootapapeshwar Kas Shwas Hari Rasa.

What is cardiac asthma?

It isn't real asthma. A weak heart lets fluid collect in the lungs, which causes wheezing and breathlessness, mostly at night. Asthma inhalers won't fix it, because the heart needs treatment.

Which asthma inhaler is best?

There's no single best one. The regular puff inhaler suits most adults. Kids and older people do better with a spacer attached. It lets them breathe the dose in slowly. Powder inhalers need a quick, hard pull. Get your technique checked too. A wrong one wastes most of the dose.

Daily Life

Can asthma patients donate blood?

Many can, if the asthma is mild and you feel well on the day. After an attack or a course of steroid tablets, you'll have to wait. Some blood banks turn away anyone on steroid medicine, and that can include certain inhalers. So tell the camp doctor everything you take.

Can asthma patients do gym?

Yes. Regular exercise can actually help keep asthma in control. Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes before you start, and begin with light workouts. Keep your reliever inhaler in your gym bag. If you start wheezing or can't catch your breath, stop and take a puff.

Which pranayama is good for asthma?

Anulom vilom and bhramari are gentle and safe for most people. Do them for 10 to 15 minutes every morning, but never during an attack. Go slow with fast ones like kapalbhati.

Can stress cause asthma attack?

Yes. Stress makes you breathe fast and shallow, and that can tighten the airways. Good sleep and a calm routine help keep attacks away.
