What are the uses of Abhayarishta?
Dhootapapeshwar Abhayarishta is an Ayurvedic tonic made to clear old constipation and ease piles. It helps when the stomach doesn't clear in the morning, you strain in the toilet and the piles hurt and burn. Harad, also called abhaya, is its main herb and gives it the name. Munakka comes next, at half the amount. With regular use, stools pass daily without straining and piles pain slowly goes down.
- Ingredients — Nishoth, danti and indrayan root soften the stool and get the bowels moving. Vidang clears worms from the stomach. Gokharu helps urine pass freely. Saunf, dhaniya, sonth and chavya help digestion, and mocharas is there for piles that bleed. Mahua flowers go in too.
- It is an arishta. Only four of the herbs are boiled in water, until about a quarter of the water is left. Once that cools, jaggery is mixed in with the rest of the herbs in powder form. Dhai flowers are added as well, since they start the fermenting. It's then sealed and kept for about a month, and a little alcohol forms in it naturally during that time.
- Benefits — Also helpful in fissure, the small painful cut near the anus that hard stools cause. Once the stools turn soft, the cut gets a chance to heal.
- Indications — Given for constipation along with difficulty in passing urine, piles, a swollen and bloated belly, and weak digestion with poor appetite.
- Dosage — 10 to 20 ml (2 to 4 teaspoonfuls) twice a day. Mix it with the same amount of lukewarm water before taking.
- Side Effects — Nothing much is reported at the normal dose. Taking far more than that can cause loose motions, stomach ache or acidity. It is not taken in pregnancy, because the indrayan root in it can lead to a miscarriage.
- Baidyanath Arshkuthar Ras is often given with it when the piles are swollen and hurting badly.
- Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day and add fruit, salad, dal and whole grains to your meals. Don't sit on the toilet for long or push hard, as that puts more pressure on the piles.
