What are the uses of Amritarishta?
Dhootapapeshwar Amritarishta is an Ayurvedic tonic for fever that keeps coming back. It also removes the weakness left after fever. It helps when a mild fever stays for days, the body feels weak and the mouth tastes bitter. It has much more giloy than any other herb. Dashmool, a mix of ten roots, is also added. Taken daily, the fever slowly goes down and strength comes back.

- Ingredients — After giloy, jeera is the biggest herb in it, and it helps bring back the appetite. Kutki, saptaparni and pittapapda are bitter herbs that help bring the fever down. Sonth, kali mirch and pippali help digestion. Atis and indrajau stop the loose motions that often come with fever. Nagarmotha and nagkesar go in too.
- It is an arishta. Giloy and the dashmool roots are boiled in water until only about a quarter of it is left. Jaggery is mixed into this liquid, and the other herbs are added as powder. The jar is then closed and kept aside for a month to ferment. A little alcohol forms naturally in this time. None is added from outside.
- Benefits — Also good for people who catch cold, cough and fever again and again. A regular course helps the body fight these off better.
- Indications — Given for malaria type fever that comes with shivering, typhoid, jaundice, and a swollen liver or spleen left behind by a long fever.
- Dosage — 10 to 20 ml, that is 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls, twice a day. Add the same amount of lukewarm water before drinking.
- Side Effects — Usually no trouble at the normal dose. Too much of it can cause burning or irritation in the stomach. There isn't enough proof that it's safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's usually avoided then.
- Dhootapapeshwar Suvarna Vasant Malati is often given with it when the fever keeps coming back and the person has become thin and weak.
- Eat light food like khichdi, moong dal and soup while the fever is still coming, and drink enough water. Oily, heavy meals make recovery slower.
