What are the uses of Balchaturbhadrika Syrup?
Dhootapapeshwar Balchaturbhadrika Syrup is an Ayurvedic syrup made to control repeated loose motions and vomiting in children. Thin stools many times a day, throwing up soon after a feed, no interest in food. It helps in these troubles. Four herbs go in, each in exactly the same amount. That is where the name comes from, since chatur means four. Given regularly, the loose motions and vomiting start to settle.

- Ingredients — Nagarmotha helps stop loose motions. Pippali helps digestion and clears a blocked chest. Atis is a mild root that shows up in a lot of Ayurvedic medicines for children. And kakdasingi, a hollow growth that forms on the branches of a tree, is there for cough.
- It is a syrup, not an arishta. The four herbs are turned into an extract and mixed into sugar and honey.
- Benefits — Also useful for gas, stomach pain and the upset tummy many babies get while their teeth are coming in.
- Indications — Given for cough in children, and for breathing that turns fast and hard.
- Dosage — Up to 1 year: 2.5 ml (half a teaspoon). 1 to 3 years: 5 ml (one teaspoon). 3 to 7 years: 10 ml (two teaspoons). Each dose is given two to three times a day.
- Side Effects — Nothing much is reported at the normal dose. Giving a lot more than that can leave a small child's stomach feeling hot or uneasy. Stop it if a rash shows up.
- Dhootapapeshwar Kumarkalyan Rasa is often given with it when the child is thin, weak and keeps falling ill.
During loose motions, keep giving ORS or boiled and cooled water in small sips so the child doesn't dry out. If there's blood in the stool, or the child hasn't passed urine for many hours, see a doctor the same day.
