What are the uses of Lohasava?
Dhootapapeshwar Lohasava is an Ayurvedic tonic for anemia and the weakness it brings. It helps when the face and nails turn pale, a little work makes you tired and you often feel dizzy. Loha bhasma, an ash made from iron, is the most important part. Harad, baheda and amla, together called triphala, are also added. As you keep taking it, haemoglobin rises and the body feels active again.
Quick Facts:
- Ingredients — Sonth, kali mirch, pippali, chitrak and ajwain bring the hunger back. Vidang clears worms from the stomach. Worms are a common cause of low blood. Nagarmotha helps stop loose motions.
- It is an asava, which means nothing in it is boiled. The herbs and the iron ash are powdered and mixed straight into water. Dhai flowers are added because they make the mix ferment. The vessel then stays shut for close to a month. The fermenting makes a little alcohol by itself. None is added from outside.
- Benefits — Good for the liver as well. It is given when the liver is swollen or fatty, and to people recovering from jaundice.
- Indications — Given for swelling in the body, an enlarged spleen, stomach trouble that keeps coming back and a hard lump of gas in the belly. It is also used for piles, a fistula near the anus, cough, breathing trouble, common skin problems and itching.
- Dosage — 10 to 20 ml, that is 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls, twice a day. Mix it with the same quantity of lukewarm water before drinking.
- Side Effects — Stools can turn dark or black while you are on it. That's the iron, and it is harmless. Taking more than the dose can cause constipation, nausea or burning in the stomach. Pregnant women don't take it, as chitrak is not safe in pregnancy. It is also not for people who already have too much iron in the body, like many thalassemia patients.
- Women whose low blood comes from heavy periods often take Ashokarishta alongside it.
- Don't have tea within an hour of a dose, since tea stops the body from absorbing iron. And get your haemoglobin tested again after a month or two to see how far it has gone up.
