What are the uses of Raktastambhak Vati?

Dhootapapeshwar Raktastambhak is an Ayurvedic tablet made to control bleeding that keeps coming back. It helps with nosebleeds, gums that bleed while brushing, and blood that comes with stool in piles. Nagkesar, mocharas and lac go into it in equal amounts. These three are ground with geru in the juice of doob grass. Taken regularly, it helps the blood clot faster and the bleeding stops.

• It is a proprietary medicine. So the mix is one company's own recipe, not a standard one that many brands make. There is no mercury or metal ash in it.
• Benefits — Hard stools can cause a small cut near the anus. This is called a fissure. It bleeds a little every time you pass stool. This tablet helps stop that bleeding too.
• Indications — Coughing up blood. Passing blood with urine. It is given in both.
• Dosage — 2 to 3 tablets, two or three times a day. Have them with Usheerasava, Chandanasava, Dhootapapeshwar Sheetasudha, cow's milk, butter or honey.
• Side Effects — Side effects are rare at the usual dose. Going over it can make you constipated. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should avoid it, and so should children. Blood in the cough or urine, or bleeding that won't stop, needs to be seen by a doctor first.
• For bleeding piles, Abhayarishta is often given with it. It keeps the stool soft, so passing stool does not make the piles bleed again.
• A dry nose cracks easily, and many nosebleeds start that way. In hot or dry weather, rub a little cow ghee just inside the nostrils at bedtime.

Raktastambhak Vati Ingredients: Nagkesar, Mocharas, Lac and Geru

Each tablet has 350 mg of active ingredients:

• Nagakeshara stamen (nagkesar): 100 mg
• Mocharasa exudate (semal gum): 100 mg
• Shodhit Laksha (laakh): 100 mg
• Shodhit Gairika (geru): 50 mg
• Processed in Doorva whole plant swaras (doob grass juice)

Preservatives: sodium methyl paraben and sodium propyl paraben.

The nagkesar in Raktastambhak is the dried, thread-like part from the centre of the flower. It has long been used at home for bleeding piles. Mocharas comes from the semal tree, the tall one with big red flowers and pods full of cotton. A dark gum oozes from its bark and dries hard. This gum has a drying, tightening effect, so less blood leaks out. Lac, a sticky natural resin, is left on tree branches by an insect. Here it helps small wounds close up. You've seen doob grass on any lawn. Its juice is a well-known home remedy for nosebleeds.

What to Eat

Eat light meals that still give the body enough strength. Any of rice, wheat, jau (barley), jowar or ragi can be the main grain. Moong, masoor, chana and arhar are the dals to cook. Add palak and other green leafy sabzi, plus chichinda (snake gourd). For fruit, go for anaar, khajoor, amla and black kishmish. Cow's milk, cow ghee and goat's milk can be taken daily. Nariyal pani and fresh sugarcane juice make good drinks through the day.

What to Avoid

Cut out spicy food first. Roasted meat and fish, like tandoori dishes, should go as well. Leave kulthi (horse gram) and urad dal off the menu. Keep baingan, methi, sarson (mustard), garlic, dahi and papaya away from your plate. The same goes for kaju, both the nut and the fruit. Don't eat food made with soda or khar, and don't drink alcohol. Milk and fish should never be eaten in the same meal.

Lifestyle

Get enough rest and sleep at the same time every night. Hard exercise and heavy lifting can start the bleeding again, so avoid them for now. Stay out of the hot sun. A hot kitchen or any hot place is best avoided too. Keep stress away as much as you can. Smoking has to stop, as it dries the nose and hurts the gums. For bleeding gums, use a soft toothbrush. Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need. With piles or a fissure, wash the area with water after passing stool. Then put a little Baidyanath Jatyadi Tel on it with clean cotton. It helps the sore spot heal.
