What are the uses of Amlapitta Mishran Syrup?
Dhootapapeshwar Amlapitta Mishran is an Ayurvedic syrup made to control acidity that keeps coming back. It helps with chest burning after meals, sour burps and sour water in the mouth. It has at least five times more Muktashukti bhasma than any one herb. This ash is made from pearl oyster shells. Mulethi and giloy are added too. Taken regularly, it calms the extra acid and eases the burning.

- Ingredients — Neem, chirayata and parwal leaves are all very bitter, and bitter herbs like these calm pitta. Pitpapda and adusa leaf help cool the body too. Bhringraj is there for the liver. And there's a small amount of harad, baheda and amla, the three triphala fruits, to keep motions regular.
- It is a suspension. This means the Muktashukti bhasma in it does not dissolve in the liquid the way sugar dissolves in water. It stays in the syrup as a very fine powder. When the bottle is kept aside and not used for some time, this powder slowly settles at the bottom. So shake the bottle well before every dose. If you don't, the first few spoons will have less medicine and the last few will have too much. Keep it in a cool, dry place. Not in the fridge, though.
- Benefits — Helps when the stomach feels heavy and full after eating very little, and when hunger drops. People with gastritis, where the inside of the stomach gets sore and swollen, also take it as a course of a few weeks.
- Dosage — 5 to 10 ml three times a day. That is 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls each time.
- Side Effects — No side effects are commonly reported at the normal dose. Going above it, or taking it for many months without a break, is best avoided because Muktashukti bhasma is a mineral. Not much is known about its safety in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's usually skipped then.
- When to see a doctor: Chest burning that comes with chest pain, sweating or breathlessness needs a doctor right away. See a doctor too if you have black stools, vomiting, trouble swallowing, weight loss, or acidity that does not settle in a few weeks.
- If acidity also brings on headaches and giddiness, Dhootapapeshwar Sootashekhar Rasa Gold tablets are often added alongside.
- Don't leave long gaps between meals, and don't lie down within two hours of eating. Cut down on chilli and fried food while you're on it.
