What are the uses of Dashmularishta?
Dhootapapeshwar Dashmoolarishta is an Ayurvedic tonic for weakness and body pain after delivery. It is useful when the body feels sore and worn out, the lower back and joints keep aching, and hunger does not come properly. Its base is dashmool, a group of ten herbs. Good amounts of chitrak and pushkarmool are added too. Over time, it eases the tiredness and brings the appetite back.
Quick Facts:
- Ingredients — Of all the plant items in it, munakka is used in the biggest amount. Shatavari, ashwagandha and vidarikand add strength, while khadir and manjishtha clean the blood. Giloy is added for immunity. Jatamansi calms the mind, so sleep comes more easily. Kitchen spices like saunf, laung, elaichi and dalchini are in it as well.
- It is an arishta. Sixty-one plant items go into this one, a very long list for a single medicine. Most of them are boiled down in water, and that liquid is then left to ferment with dhai flowers. No alcohol is added from outside. The little that is in it forms by itself while it ferments.
- Benefits — Men and older people take it too, mostly when the body is slow to recover after a long illness or a bad fever.
- Indications — Given for vata problems, cramping pains, a body that keeps getting thinner, cough, trouble breathing, piles and a swollen, bloated belly.
- Dosage — 10 to 20 ml, which is 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls, twice a day. Mix it with the same quantity of lukewarm water before drinking.
- Side Effects — Chitrak and pippali are hot herbs, so going over the dose can cause acidity and a burning in the chest. At the normal amount, most people have no trouble. It's meant for after the baby comes, not before, since chitrak is a herb pregnant women are told to avoid.
- Baidyanath Sutikabharan Ras is often given with it in the first weeks after delivery, mainly when the new mother also runs a mild fever.
- Warm, freshly cooked meals like moong dal khichdi and soups go well with this tonic. Cold drinks and fried snacks are better left alone for a few weeks.
