What are the uses of Jeerakadyarishta?
Dhootapapeshwar Jeerakadyarishta is an Ayurvedic tonic made to improve weak digestion and bring repeated loose motions under control. It helps when the stomach cramps right after a meal, when thin stools come several times a day, and when there is no appetite at all. Jeera goes in the largest amount. Sonth and jaiphal are added with it. Taken regularly, the cramping calms down and food starts getting digested properly.
Quick Facts:
- Ingredients — Ajwain and laung work on the gas. Dalchini, tejpatta and elaichi settle the stomach after a meal. Nagarmotha and nagkesar dry up the loose motions. Kankol, a pepper like fruit, goes in as well. Dhataki flowers are added to make it ferment, and jaggery forms the base.
- It is an arishta. The herbs are boiled in water until a thick decoction is left. Once it cools, dhataki flowers and jaggery go in to start the fermenting, along with the powdered spices. It is then sealed and left for about a month. A small amount of alcohol forms in it on its own during that time.
- Benefits — Useful for new mothers after delivery, when digestion has gone weak and nothing feels like it is being absorbed.
- Indications — Given for weak digestion, loose motions, the long-standing trouble where food never digests properly, and the recovery weeks after childbirth.
- Dosage — Take 10 to 20 ml (2 to 4 teaspoonfuls) twice a day, with an equal amount of lukewarm water added to it.
- Side Effects — Nothing much is reported at the normal dose. Taking a lot more than that can leave a burning feeling in the stomach. It is avoided in pregnancy, because of the jaifal in it, even though it is meant for the weeks after delivery.
- Hingwashtak Churna is often given with it when gas and heaviness after meals trouble a person more than the loose motions do.
- Keep the food light and home cooked while you are on it. Oily and outside food undo most of the work. The tonic works slowly, so stay with it for a few weeks before deciding if it suits you.
