Product description

What are the uses of Punarnavasava?

Dhootapapeshwar Punarnavasava (Punarnavasav) is an Ayurvedic tonic made to bring down swelling from water held in the body. It helps when the face looks puffy on waking, the feet swell by evening and the stomach feels bloated. It is made from punarnava root. Two other roots, bala and patha, go in the same amount. Over time, the extra water passes out in urine and the swelling slowly goes down.

Quick Facts:

  • Ingredients — Giloy, chitrak, kantakari and adusa come next, at half the amount of the main roots. Chitrak and kali mirch help digestion. Kantakari and adusa are good for the chest when breathing feels heavy, and giloy builds strength. Elaichi, dalchini, tejpatta, khus and nagkesar go in as well, in small amounts.
  • It is an asava, so none of the herbs are boiled. They are ground coarse and left to soak in a sealed vessel for about a month. Dhataki flowers are added to get the fermenting started. Some alcohol forms by itself during this time. None is added from outside.
  • Benefits — It is also taken for a weak liver. It helps bile flow properly into the gut, and people with fatty liver are often given it.
  • Indications — Given for a swollen spleen, low blood or anaemia, a lump felt inside the belly, itching and common skin troubles. It is also used for a small opening near the back passage that keeps oozing pus.
  • Dosage — 10 to 20 ml, that is 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls, twice a day. Mix it with the same amount of lukewarm water before drinking.
  • Side Effects — Hardly any at the normal dose. Going over it can cause burning in the stomach or loose motions. It is avoided in pregnancy, because chitrak root, one of its herbs, is known to be unsafe for a pregnant woman.
  • Many people take Baidyanath Punarnava Mandur with it. That tablet has iron in it along with punarnava, so it suits someone who feels weak and tired as well as swollen.
  • Cut down on salt while you're on it. Pickles, papad and packaged namkeen carry a lot of salt, and salt makes the body hold on to water.
